The Central government has notified the appointment of four Calcutta High Court judges as permanent judges. This comes after the Supreme Court Collegium, headed by CJI DY Chandrachud passed a resolution to the same effect on 18th January 2024. 

Another judge was given a fresh one-year term as an additional judge.

The Collegium also comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and BR Gavai passed the resolution recommending permanent appointments for the following judges of the Calcutta High Court:

i) Justice Shampa Dutt (Paul)

ii) Justice Raja Basu Chowdhury

iii) Justice Ananya Bandyopadhyay

iv) Justice Rai Chattopadhyay

Additionally, Justice Lapita Banerji (PHC: Calcutta), who was transferred to Punjab & Haryana High Court, last year, was appointed as a permanent judge of the Punjab & Haryana High Court against a vacancy of permanent judge at the Calcutta High Court.

Justice Subhendu Samanta has also been appointed for a fresh one-year term as an additional judge from 18th May 2024.
