The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed an appeal in Calcutta High Court challenging the life sentence imposed on the convict in the RG Kar rape and murder case Sanjoy Roy.

The CBI has called for a death sentence for Roy, who was found guilty of the gruesome rape and murder of the trainee doctor at RG Kar college and hospital.

Notably, the state had also approached a division bench comprising of Justices Debangsu Basak and Md Shabbar Rashidi against the verdict of the sessions judge.

The CBI in that appeal opposed the State's stance and submitted that since the investigation was carried out by a central agency, the prerogative to appeal in such a case would also be of the central government.
