Taking a stern stance against an advocate who intended to show ‘red eyes’ and also abuse the court, the Calcutta High Court recently imposed a cost of Rs. 50,000/- on him.

This decision came from a Single Judge while dealing with a writ appeal.

In its order, the Court, perusing an earlier order in the matter (dated 16th October 2023), noted that Justice Bibek Chaudhuri had held that the writ petition would be heard by Justice Suvra Ghosh and hence, the Court ordered that the said direction may be followed as it was claimed that substantially it was heard by her Ladyship.

Following this, the Court noted that the advocate appearing for the petitioners before the Court intended to show his red eyes and abuse the Court.

In view of the insulting demeanour of the advocate, the Court imposed a cost of Rs.50,000/- on the advocate appearing on behalf of the petitioners to be deposited with the High Court Legal Aid Services Authorities.
