Recently, the Allahabad High Court has sought response from the State Government of Uttar Pradesh on why establishment of All India Institute of Medical Sciences is not necessary in Prayagraj.
In a public interest litigation seeking establishment of AIIMS in Prayagraj, the bench of Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta and Justice Manish Kumar Nigam had earlier sought response from the Union Health Ministry regarding the plans of the Central Government in establishing AIIMS in Prayagraj.
In the instructions received from Government of India, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, PMSSY Division placed before the Court, it was stated that in the Budget of 2014-15, allocation was made for setting up AIIMS in Poorvanchal region of Uttar Pradesh. The State Government was given the responsibility to identify a suitable location for setting up of the institution and the State Government had chosen Gorakhpur as a suitable location.
The Additional Solicitor General of India stated that there was no fresh consideration regarding setting up of AIIMS in UP after the budget of 2014-15.
“In last ten years, the population in the region has increased substantially, resulting in acute pressure on the existing medical infrastructure,” observed the Court.
Observing that no assessment of ground realities for establishment of AIIMS in UP was made despite orders of the Court, response was sought from the State Government on the matter.
The case is directed to be listed on 17th October, 2024.
