The Gauhati High Court has issued notice on a petition demanding an extension of the age of superannuation of Ayurvedic doctors in the state.

The notice was issued by Justice N. Kotiswar Singh.

The court has been approached by the Assam Ayurvedic Doctors Service Association, seeking an extension of age of superannuation of Ayurvedic doctors from 60 years to 65 years, as has been done by the state authorities for allopathic and dental doctors.

It submits that extension of the superannuation age was to cope up with the increased need for doctors in health service in the State. The same, it therefore says, should apply to Ayurvedic doctors as well.

They assert that this was a clear case of discrimination, as the petitioners are also equally contributing to the well being of the society, and hence, the State’s decision to leave them out is arbitrary.

During a hearing last week, the court decided to consider the interim prayer on the next date but ordered that in the meantime, any such Ayurvedic doctors who may attain the age of superannuation may be allowed to continue.

The matter will next be heard on December 19.
