Free Legal Aid Clinic set up GNLU

The Legal Services Committee under the aegis of the GNLU Centre for Law and Society set up a Free Legal Aid Clinic at Koba village in Gandhinagar district on January 18th, 2016. The clinic was inaugurated by Shri Ashish Dave, Chairman of the Gandhinagar Urban Development Authority along with Shri Shambuji Thakor who is the Member of Legislative Assembly from South Gandhinagar, Prof. (Dr.) Bimal N. Patel, Director, Gujarat National Law University, Mr. Saurabh Anand, Faculty Convener of GNLU Centre for Law and Society and Legal Services Committee and Shri Yogesh Nayi, Sarpanch, Koba village.

The clinic intends to provide free legal aid to the people of Koba village and help them to settle their disputes amicably. This clinic is being setup under Section 4(k) of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 which emphasizes on developing and promoting clinical legal education along with supervising the establishment and functioning of legal services clinics across various institutions in consultation with the Bar Council of India. The villagers will be provided assistance through a variety of methods including traditional casework, summary advice, community legal education, awareness programmes and community development.

Furthermore, the Koba Gram Panchayat will be distributing dustbins as part of activities under the Swachh Bharat and Nirmal Gujarat programmes started by the Central and State Governments respectively in the days to come. It is worth mentioning that Koba has been adopted by the Gujarat National Law University under the Swachh Bharat initiative.

The Koba Gram Panchayat has been actively working for the welfare of the Koba residents. The Panchayat will be installing around ten computers in the Government Primary School, Koba village to encourage computer education of children. Moreover, in order to fight the menace of malnutrition, they will also be giving away milk and milk products for the kids of the village twice a week.

GNLU Legal Services Committee is one of the most significant initiatives of GNLU students which aim to contribute to the empowerment of the society by providing legal awareness and aid. Working to realize the motto “Awareness, Assertion, Action”, GNLU LSC undertakes teaching, research and training round-the-year on issues and challenges faced by the civil society at large.
