BACKGROUND OF THE CASE
In April 2004, Lisa Montgomery who was 36 years old then, met Bobbie Stinnett at a dog show. Stinnett was a businesswoman who ran a website for doing dog business. In 2004, when Stinnett became pregnant, she shared the news with her online business community including Montgomery.
Lisa Montgomery had wanted to become pregnant but was unable to do so as she had undergone sterilization. Therefore, she began telling people that she was pregnant and started wearing maternity clothes pretending to be a pregnant woman. So much so, that her husband and children started to believe her as they were unaware of the fact that she could not become a mother again.
In December 2004, Stinnett was in her 8th month of pregnancy. Lisa approached her and asked her to schedule a meeting for wanting to purchase a dog. Therefore, Stinnett called Lisa to her house. Lisa while travelling to the house had taken white cord and a sharp knife along with her.
Lisa then attacked Stinnett using the cord to strangle her until she was unconscious. Thereafter, she cut into Stinnett's abdomen with the sharp knife causing her to regain consciousness.
Stinnett, after becoming conscious, started to struggle with Lisa in order to stop her, Lisa strangled her again, resulting in her death. Thereafter, Lisa extracted the baby from Stinnett's womb by cutting the umbilical cord and took the child with her.
Stinnett's body was found by her mother after which she called 911.
A district court had awarded death sentence to her after the conclusion of her trial. Lisa had been in a federal prison in Texas since 2008 in a psychiatric care. She was kept in an isolation cell under a suicide watch since the time she had received her execution date.
