About S.N. Bhuyan
S.N. Bhuyan was born on July 29, 1924, in Niznarikali village, Nagaon, Assam. He faced significant hardships early in life, losing his mother at 2½ years old but overcame them with determination. Bhuyan joined the Quit India movement as a student in Nagaon and later pursued higher education at Cotton College and Gauhati University, earning a master's in History. He became involved in the communist movement and was elected General Secretary of Assam Chatra Sanmilan in 1947. Arrested and imprisoned for six months in the early 1950s due to communist party conflicts, he resumed his studies and earned an LLB from Earle Law College (later Government Law College) in 1957. Bhuyan trained under lawyer Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed and enrolled as an advocate in 1958, marking the beginning of his distinguished legal career. Known for his hard work, dedication, and courteous demeanor, Bhuyan built an extensive practice across various branches of law and was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Gauhati High Court in 1978. He served as Advocate General for Assam twice, from 1983-1986 and 1993-1996, and also held the position of Chairman of the State Bar Council. Bhuyan made significant contributions to the development of law, as evidenced by numerous law reports, and was a mentor to many young lawyers. His impact and legacy were honored when he was felicitated for completing 50 years of legal practice by the Gauhati High Court Bar Association and the Lawyers Association, Guwahati. Known for his boldness, courage, and commitment to justice, Bhuyan remains a legal luminary in the true sense.
