The National Green Tribunal has directed the Telangana State Pollution Control Board to recover compensation from Kisan Agro Feeds Factory in Kothapalli, for the damage to the environment in accordance with law and permit operation of the unit only after remedial steps are taken by it.
A bench led by Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel gave the direction while hearing a petition filed by one Madhusudhan Reddy, who complained that while extracting oil from the dead bodies of animals, bad odour was emanating affecting local residents and animals. Thus causing pollution to the environment.
On January 21, the State Pollution Control Board submitted a report acknowledging the illegalities. The report said "The industry has provided control systems at various odour generating locations i.e., suction hood followed by scrubber, bio filters to control the odour problem. However, odour was observed in the production block and within the industry premises. The committee visited the Kothapally village and no odour was observed at the Kothapally village. However, the villagers are informed that they are facing odour problems from the industry. As per the analysis reports, the parameter BOD is exceeding the prescribed standard."
Following which the tribunal disposed off the application saying the pollution control board may take steps to assess and recover compensation.
