The National Green Tribunal recently sought a report from a Joint Committee comprising of representatives of Central and State Pollution Control Boards on air pollution caused by carpet manufacturing companies in Haryana.

The Principal Bench was hearing an application against two carpet manufacturing companies Uni Product and Golden Tex operating in Rewari district of Haryana. It was alleged that in the course their working, the carpet waste produced by them comprised of synthetic material which was causing air pollution on being burnt. Moreover it was also alleged that these units were extracting ground water for commercial purposes in absence of any valid consent or without complying with any safeguards for recharge of groundwater.

In light of such grievances, the NGT ordered a Joint Committee comprising of representatives of Central Pollution Control Board, State Pollution Control Board and the District Magistrate of Rewari to submit a factual and action taken report on these issues within one month of the date of the order. The State Board was appointed as the nodal agency for coordination.
