The National Green Tribunal has directed the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) to prepone the timeline by a year for evacuation of fly ash from the M/s Indira Gandhi Super Thermal Power Project (IGSTPP), Jhajjar at Village-Jharli, Haryana as it is causing Air Pollution and affecting the health of local inhabitants.

A bench led by Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel while hearing an application filed by one Vedprakash who claimed he suffered from TB disease said "We are of the view that having regard to potential hazard of air pollution and public health in storing the fly ash, the timeline needs to be preponed to 31.12.2020."

As per a report submitted to the tribunal the expected evacuation would be done by March or August 2021. "The HSPCB may accordingly ensure that the plant in question revises the plan in above terms. A performance guarantee in the sum of Rs.50 lakhs may be taken from the unit for complying with the said plan."

The issue for consideration is handling of the accumulated fly ash at the units of M/s NTPC Aravali Power Co. (P) Ltd. and M/s Jhajjar Power Ltd. (CLP India) in District Jhajjar. According to the complaint, huge amount of fly ash was generated and accumulated causing air pollution which resulted in diseases to the inhabitants.
