Election Commission of India has announced that the polling for the next presidential election, if necessary, will be held on July 17 as the term of office of present President Pranab Mukherjee, is ending on 24th July, 2017.
“The last date for nominations is June 28. The date for scrutiny of the nomination is June 30. And the last date for withdrawal of nomination is July 1. The voting will begin at 10 am on July 17 and will go on till 5 pm, he added. The counting of votes will begin at 11 am on July 20. Election Vice-President will also be held on the same date.” Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi said.
Article 62 of the Constitution, an election to fill the vacancy caused by the expiration of the term of office of the outgoing President is required to be completed before the expiration of the term. The law provides that the notification for election shall be issued on or after the sixtieth day before the expiry of term of office of the outgoing President.
