The Delhi High Court on Friday directed the Delhi Police to assess the level of threat to Pankaj Pushkar, MLA from Timarpur, who moved the high court seeking protection after he received abusive messages and threat to his life and that of his family.
Justice Vinod Goel directed the police to analyse the threats received by Pushkar who sought protection for his family and himself, and also for his property.
Pushkar’s counsel Prashant Bhushan and Shakti Vardhan told the court that Pushkar has been acting against irregularities in the public distribution system.
The enquiries were set up and licences of some fair prize shops were cancelled soon after he became the MLA from the constituency.
“But, resultantly the petitioner started receiving threats and pressures to his life. As a Delhi Legislative Assembly’s nominee member of Delhi Library Board (an autonomous board to run Delhi Public Library), he raised issues of misappropriation and corruption in Delhi Public Library,” the petition said.
Pushkar said he moved the court following the inaction of Delhi Police on his complaints.
The court has now directed SHO, Timarpur, to ensure that no harm is caused to him and his family.
The petition also stated that on July 9, Pushkar’s name was added to a WhatsApp group called “Hindu Paksh” by one Aakash Bhatia, who has also been made a party in the petition.
“The said group started sending texts of a similar offensive and threatening nature. The petitioner was further harassed by posting on the WhatsApp group and pasting a poster at various locations of the assembly constituency of the petitioner, which contained false allegations on the petitioner that are baseless and without any substantial evidence.
“Meanwhile, content on Whatsapp was posted on regular basis, which also included a voice note in which various abuses and threats were hurled on the petitioner,” it said.
