Delhi HC Observes Environment Day With Green Pledge And Planting Trees At Various Court Premises

The Judges of the Delhi High Court led by Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal planted trees in the Delhi High Court Lawns to earmark the occasion of World Environment Day. Yesterday the High Court passed a Green Pledge to contribute to the environment. The trees were planted by Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal, Justices S Muralidhar, G. S. Sistani,Vipin Sanghi,Sunil Gaur, Pratibha Rani   Najmi Waziri,A.K. Chawla P.S. Teji,I.S. Mehta, Vinod Goel,Rekha Palli,Prathiba M. Singh etc and officers of the Registry led by Registrar General Dinesh Sharma and Registrar Vigilance Aditi Chaudhary

Justice Mittal planted trees in the Saket Court Complex in the morning and at Patiala House Courts in the evening. The High Court has also installed blue and green waste bins in view of the blue-green pledge of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan which mandates throwing wet waste in Green Baskets and dry wastes in Blue Baskets.

The High Court has also sought participation from the Bar Association, lower Courts and the marginal sections of the society, to participate in “celebration and endorsement” of environmental initiatives.

Refusing to “let this occasion pass unnoticed”, the release issued by Acting Chief Justice of the Court states,“In addition to dispensing justice in matters concerning the environment, we must demonstrate our commitment to the environment and set an example by taking actions that protect the environment around us.”

The release highlights the efforts taken by the High Court for furthering the cause. These include paperless functioning, e-filing, digitization of records, and replacement of bulbs with LEDs in Courts.

“On the world environment day, therefore, we must once again endorse our solidarity with ecology. We shall, therefore, take the initiative of planting trees and foliage thereby reiterating commitment to hygiene and our environment; rake further steps for equipping the court establishment with solar power; undertaking rain water harvesting wheresoever feasible etc. as well as steps for e-technology in all our functioning shall be revisited and applied with greater vigor,” it states.

Justice Mittal has also sought support from all District and Sessions Judges, Family Court Judges, Delhi Judicial Academy, Delhi State Services Authority, Delhi High Court Legal Services Committee and the Bar Association.

“This movement would be incomplete without the inclusion of the voices from the margins including the physically and mentally challenged, acid attack and sexual violence survivors, transgenders the old and other such sections of the society,” the release further appeals.
