The Delhi High Court recently rapped police authorities for non-registration of FIR in a case of a missing woman.

The observations were made by a Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C. Hari Shankar on a suo motu petition initiated after the Chief Justice received a letter complaining about the inaction and inability of police personnel to trace her daughter who has been missing since June, 2016.

"The above narration discloses a hopeless state of affairs inasmuch as even on a complaint regarding a missing person against which reports were called by the Registry of this court has needed reminders and then no action at all has been taken other than registration of an FIR," the Bench observed.

It then directed notice to be issued to the Commissioner of Police as well as the Deputy Commissioner of Police, ordering that they be treated as Respondents in the matter. It further appointed Advocate Siddharth Aggarwal as the amicus curiae.
