Decide On The Regularization Of Payment Of Salaries In Private Engineering Colleges: SC To AICTE [Read Order]

The Supreme Court on Monday directed the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to decide on the issue of regularizing and ensuring timely payment of salaries in private engineering colleges in India.

With an order to make a representation to the AICTE, the Bench comprising Chief Justice J.S. Khehar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud disposed of a Petition which had also demanded an order for inspection of such colleges throughout the country for verification of the recommended ‘student-staff ratio’ by the “annual salary paid statements to staff and not only by identification parades”.

The Petition, filed by one K.M. Karthik had further sought establishment of a welfare board or a directorate for welfare and grievance redressal of the staff at private engineering colleges, and had demanded imposition of penalty for withholding of original educational/professional certificates of staff members.

The Court disposed of the Petition with a direction to the Petitioner to submit the paper book of the Writ Petition to the Secretary of the All India Council for Technical Education.

“The AICTE shall treat the same as a representation, and shall take a conscious decision in respect of issues canvassed, and take such remedial action, as may be called for, in consonance with law,” it directed.
