  • “When I was the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court I realized there were at least 15 MA qualified persons working as peons there. I was shocked”

There is no better way to explain the acute problem of unemployment amongst the country’s youth. This detailed anecdote of Chief Justice T S Thakur recently to emphasis on the issue is enough for all to understand the gravity of the situation:

SAID CHIEF JUSTICE T S THAKUR: “Today the problem of unemployment among the educated is so enormous that if we call for applications for the post of chaprasi (peon) in the Supreme Court, we are seeing that even post graduates are applying. This shows the extent of unemployment amongst the country’s educated youth

I remember when I was Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court, a man always dressed in whites used to serve me tea and even clean my table. I asked him since when was he working there.

He replied -ten years

I asked him his educational qualification. He said he was MA pass.

I asked him why he was doing the job of a chaprasi (peon) when he was an MA pass and why he did not look for any other job. He replied he was not getting any other job though he had applied at various places.

I immediately called the Registrar and said that this man was an MA why cannot we give him some other job and asked why we are wasting him as a peon . I asked the Registrar why we cannot elevate him at least as a clerk?

Then the registrar replied: There are at least 15 persons working as peons in this High Court and who are MA pass. They are also making and serving tea to judges in the High Court and also cleaning their tables as their main job. Whom all can we elevate as a clerk ? If we elevate one of them, all others will also make similar demands and we will have a real problem at hand.
