The CBI on Thursday arrested sitting Haryana civil judge (senior division, Kaithal) Ravneet Garg in an ongoing investigation of the murder of his wife Gitanjali Garg in 2013.
He was produced before CBI Special Magistrate Kapil Rathi on Thursday morning and was remanded in 5-day police custody.
The then chief judicial magistrate’s wife’s body was found in a park at Police Lines, Gurgaon, on July 17, 2013, with multiple bullet injuries.
Ravneet Garg’s licensed revolver was also found on the spot. He later identified the body and informed the police that she occasionally went for a stroll in the park.
The case, which was initially treated as a suicide, was registered as a murder case three days later against her husband and in-laws on the complaints of her family members and on revelations of the post mortem report. They alleged that she was being harassed for dowry and demanded a CBI inquiry. The CBI took up the case in August 2013, i.e, a month after the alleged murder.
Geetanjali’s brother Pradeep Aggarwal, complainant of the case, had informed that problems arose between the couple, who got married in 2007, after the birth of their first daughter. After their second daughter was born, things reportedly worsened.
She was allegedly harassed by her in-laws and there was notable ‘discontent’ and ‘dispute’ in the family. Her father and brother also demanded a narco test of her husband. They alleged that there were discrepancies in the lie detection and brain mapping test reports.
As per reports, the judge was arrested under Sections 302 and 34 (murder committed with common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and was taken into custody after the CBI intimated the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and Sessions judge of Kaithal.
