By an interim order yesterday, the Madras High Court Bench comprising of Justice V.Ramasubramanian and Justice V M Velumani ordered the addition of Tamil Nadu National Law School (TNNLS) in Srirangam for this year’s Common Law Admission Test (CLAT).

CLAT is to be conducted on 11th of May. It is conducted on alternation by 14 NLUs in the country for admission to the LL.B and LL.M programs offered by them.

The Bench reportedly termed the CLAT Committee as “only a voluntary association of universities” without any statutory backing and thereby, passed the interim order. The judges said that this interim order would be subject to the ultimate order in the writ petition.

R Rajkumar, the Petitioner, is an advocate based in Tiruchirappalli near Srirangam. According to him, TNNLS, a state university had tendered an application for inclusion in the core committee of CLAT.

The judges noted the creation of a committee for the purpose of inclusion and a subsequent meeting on Jan 21, 2014. Standards and guidelines for admission were framed. However, no physical inspection was conducted. Without such inspection, inclusion of TNNLS couldn’t be considered, according to the convener of the Core committee.

The Bench also observed that the Universities in Vishakapattinam and Delhi haven’t yet become a part of CLAT; however, it is not certain whether the two Universities have applied for the same.

The Petitioner demanded the creation of a core committee to supervise the conduct of CLAT. In the meantime, the Courts of the country seem be handling the cause. In another Allahabad High Court judgment yesterday, the Court removed any kind of age restriction for CLAT aspirants.
