The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court last week directed a petitioner seeking anticipatory bail to “apologise in person with folded hands” to the Sub -Inspector of Thirukurungudi Police, Tirunelveli for insulting him.
The petitioner, one Rajarajan had, along with four others, reportedly abused and threatened a policeman on duty when their vehicle was flagged for a routine check. All five of them were then booked under Sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation), and 294 (obscene acts and songs) of the Indian Penal Code.
While the police had rounded up the others, Rajarajan had managed to flee, and now approached the court with an anticipatory bail application. Hearing his plea, Justice G.R. Swaminathan directed him to apologise to the officer, and restrained the police from arresting him in the meantime.
