According to the latest statistics released by the National Crime Record Bureau, the number of rapes cases reported in India has increased from 24,923 in 2012 to 33,707 in 2013, indicating a 35.2% rise over the year.

Madhya Pradesh saw the highest number of instances of rapes reported, with an increase of 26.6% from 3,425 instances in 2012 to 4,335 in 2013. Delhi is followed by Mumbai (391), Jaipur (192) and Pune (171) among the top unsafe cities for women in the country.

Increase in the instances of rape has been maximum Delhi over the year. Instances have risen from 706 in 2012 to 1,636 in 2013, indicating an increase of 131.7%.

The safest city has been found to be Kannur, with 7 instances of rapes reported, while the safest state is recorded to be Nagaland, with 31 instances.

In 31,807 cases, the offender was known to the victim, with 539 instances in which the offenders were parents or close family members of the victim, 2,315 instances where the offender was a relative and 10,782 instances where the offender was a neighbor. The state with the maximum instances of known offenders is recorded to be Madhya Pradesh, with 4,335 instances.

It is also revealed that most victims are aged between 18 and 30 years (15,556) and 14 and 18 years (8,877).

Andhra Pradesh accounts for the highest number of incidences of crime committed against women, at a figure of 32,809, followed by Uttar Pradesh (32,546) and West Bengal (29,826). Sikkim recorded the least instances of crime committed against women at a figure of 93.

The Nirbhaya case did start a movement in the country to protect the women from any kind of mental or physical abuse. These increases incidences might also be seen as an indicator of more and more women coming forward to report such crimes. However, in that case, the conviction rate isn't that satisfying.

The statistics also show that the total number of rape cases pending from the previous year were 47,457. The number of cases pending of the end of the year were14, 940, with 2,375 such cases where the charge was found fake or where there existed a mistake of fact or law. Rape cases have a conviction rate of 27.1% in the country. This conviction rate is the lowest after dacoity.
