In a particularly bizarre incident, a 2nd year law student has reportedly been arrested by the special cell of the Delhi Police for impersonating Supreme Court Judge, Justice Kurian Joseph, and seeking a favour from UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s office.

The accused, Tausif-ul-Haque, had telephoned Mr. R.N. Pandey, Principal Secretary (Law), UP, asking him to appoint his college lecturer as a Government Law Officer at the Allahabad High Court. Mr. Pandey is then reported to have discussed the matter with Mr. R.N. Nijhawan, the Registrar of Supreme Court.

With the incident having reached Justice Joseph, it was revealed that he had never made any such call. Justice Joseph then wrote to Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik, requesting him to lodge a complaint. Sensing the gravity of the charge, Mr. Patnaik transferred the case to the Special Cell of Delhi Police for investigation.

The Police investigation revealed that the student has had a ‘habit’ of impersonating top Government officials to obtain undue favors. Before making the call to Mr. Pandey, he had changed the true caller name of a mobile number to ‘Kurian Joseph Supreme Court of India’.

The Police had summoned the person in whose name the SIM card used in making call to Mr. Pandey was registered. Investigations are now on to find out the involvement of other persons.
